TEXTILE ART : PROCESS, TECHNIQUES AND CREATIVITY

NORWANI MD. NAWAWI

INTRODUCTION

Textile artist and designers gain their inspirations from experiences in life, which are inter twined with their formal and informal education backgrounds. Every artistic creativity depends on the artist'S experiences, sensibility and artistic concept. Skill is also important, as it helps to create interesting works of art intergrated with knowledge of techniques that the artist possesses. The captivating nature of textile art is evident when colours are being used to create motifs which are repeated to create patterns. This enables a flat surface to be developed into an illusion of three-dimensional forms. The intellingence in using the techniques and chosen materials to create an artwork, resides in the artist's mind, before a satisfying piece may be produced.

Muzium Seni Islam Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur . (ISBN 978983291030)

Sumptuous textiles have always held special significance in Malay culture, as they uphold long-standing traditions and play central roles in ceremony and ritual.

Much has also been said of their beauty and intricacy, which attest to the meticulous skill and virtuosity of Malay artisans.

Hand-woven fabrics, like limar, songket and tenun as well as decorated ones like kelingkan, tekat and telepuk reflect how Malay culture has developed through interactions between local weavers and the outside world.

The fact that their form, function and soul have always contained elements of modernity has helped make them competitive and relevant untill today.
